Step away from modern consumption and into the ancient rhythm of the maker. This immersive, hands on experience invites you to spend time exactly as your ancestors would have done, swapping mass produced souvenirs for the tactile satisfaction of hand crafting. Handmade Scots Irish Heritage Ring
Join Ruth in our studio overlooking Belfast Lough for an immersive jewellery session that invites you to step away from modern consumption.
Under expert guidance, you will experience the same sensory sensations as an 18th century artisan: the clang of the hammer, the warmth of the flame, and the distinct scent of a workshop in action.
Rather than simply buying a mass produced souvenir, you will spend time as your ancestors would have done, crafting your own unique silver ring from a piece of sterling silver.
Your "Wearable Memory" To Go
Once the work at the bench is done, we hand over your silver ring to wear straight away:
The Heritage: Your handcrafted piece of history, a unique heirloom with its own story and belonging.
The Hammer: A precious metal band hand stamped with "1776", 13 stars or yours or an ancestor’s initials.
The Homeland: A deep personal connection to the skill of those who stood on these same Ulster fields, bridging the gap to the New World.
From Our home to Yours
Our home and workshop is nestled in the beatiful Holywood Hills with sweeping views of Belfast Lough and the Antrim Hills.
Ruth McEwan, but now McEwan-Lyon, is of Ulster Scots heritage as her father’s blood line came across from Scotland. Having moved away from NI for many years, Ruth settled in Holywood and has retrained into the old skills of making silver and gold jewellery and now enjoys sharing these skills with beginners like you.
There are strong local Holywood connections back to the history of the times when around 200,00 Ulster Scots / Scots Irish left Belfast port on boats called names like Nancy and Friendship.
Weather permitting you will be able to see the modern boats leaving Belfast taking the same intial journey past our hillside; just as the Titanic did as well. So, with a little imagination you can picture yourself seeing the old boats gliding past.
Holywood's first Protestant Minister was Rev. Robert Cunningham and he started preaching at the Priory in 1615 and you can still visit the ruins of the Priory today.
In 1644 the Solemn League and Covenant was brought to Holywood where it was signed by the local populace.
Perhaps you are visiting Northern Ireland to complete your own family 'circle' of journeys, to see where your ancesters once lived and maybe walk the same hills that they did.
Join us to experience some time with us, making jewellery the old way and create your own memories of these Lands.
We end with some storytelling history and a newly created local drink to toast your good health and 'Safe Home'; with a little surprise to finish.

What do I need to do next to book My Experience?
If you already know the date you would like to join us, simply open the experience you want, choose how many people are taking part, and follow the questions through checkout.
If you are still deciding on a date, or you are treating someone to a thoughtful present, you can purchase one of our gift vouchers. We are happy to print a physical certificate for you, just let us know and we can post it to you or directly to the recipient. The person receiving the voucher will get a code to enter on our website when they choose the day they would like to visit.
We usually welcome between one and three people for our jewellery making experiences, although we can accommodate larger groups for special occasions. We are also beginning to offer studio tours for bigger groups, where Ruth will provide a relaxed talk and demonstration.
There is a small gift shop at the studio where most payment methods are accepted, and it is open by appointment.
What do I need to bring?
Only a camera or phone to help capture your memories and laughter of your quality time with Ruth, your family and friends. All materials, machinery, tools and refreshments are included.
How long will it take?
This Jewellery Making Experience lasts around 4.5 hours. The time will fly by and we are relaxed about the timings, so let us know if you have other plans we need to workaround.
Do I need any experience?
No experience is required as Ruth will explain everything and should you want her to will even do some of the bits if you would rather not do. Ruth has a natural talent of putting people at ease and any thoughts of 'I'm not very creative' will quickly disappear as you relax and enjoy the 'Craic' as the laughter levels increase in our workshop.
Where is NI Silver?
We are located in the beautiful Holywood Hills, County Down. We will send you our address once your booking has been confirmed. We are less than 10 minutes from Belfast, if the traffic is behaving itself.
What can I make?
You can make texured rings, bangles, pendants or earrings. These experiences have been designed for complete beginners. Ruth will take the time to explain the different making processes before you safely get involved. These experiences have been designed to fit in the 3-4 hours, so unfortunately we do not have time to cover more advanced skills such as stone setting. If you want to use gold or other precious metals please discuss this with Ruth before your experience. (ruth@nisilver.com)
Can I bring my own design?
Of course you can, all we would ask is that you discuss your ideas with Ruth before your experience. This will allow Ruth and you to refine any design ideas, to confirm what is possible within the timescales and also ensure that Ruth has the right materials for you to work with.
Optional Extras
Chains are not included with pendants and can be bought separately - sizes 16-20 inch sterling silver snake chains in stock. We also have our own gift shop, just in case you need some other gifts :))
What our Customers Say
-
The whole experience was amazing from start to finish. Ruth was so friendly and accommodating making us feel as if we were her lifelong friends. We loved making our rings (with lots of Ruth’s help of course) and we felt so proud of ourselves. Ruth and Steve welcomed us into their beautiful home and garden and provided us with a delicious array of food and drinks in their outdoor igloo. Overall it was a relaxing, creative and bonding experience which we would highly recommend.

If you're looking for that unique treat or experience, then a jewellery making workshop with Ruth at NI Silver is a must! I had such a fun time not only watching Ruth demonstrate her skill, but then making my own bespoke silver ring and of course enjoying Steve's great hospitality. What a perfect day! Thank you.

My husband and I were gifted a workshop experience and we weren't too sure what to expect, but Ruth at NI Silver made the morning an absolute pleasure. She was knowledgeable and funny, chatting away whilst showing us the steps we needed to do, and then stepping back to let us have a good go! We all had a great time and I would 100% recommend the workshop experience to anyone - I'll definitely be back some time for another go!
