Do you know her as ‘Nuala with the Hula’, the ‘Thing With The Ring’ or ‘The Doll With The Ball’?
Local jokers have always been fond of giving nicknames to our Northern Ireland landmarks.
Also known as the Thanksgiving Statue she is 19.5m tall and designed to be Belfast’s ‘Beacon of Hope’ staring down over one of the city’s busiest intersections; breaking up the boredom of many a traffic jam!
A meeting place and a jumping-off point for tourist hotspots like St George’s Market or the Waterfront Hall, she has graced the Laganside landscape for 15 years.
The public art piece was the brainchild of Belfast woman Myrtle Smyth, who was inspired by Thanksgiving Square in Dallas, Texas.
Her Scottish sculptor Andy Scott is now based in Philadelphia, USA, has since gone on to create the monumental Kelpies in his home country.
The team behind the sculpture wanted something that would create a multi-faith, multi-denominational space where everyone could come to contemplate amid the hustle and bustle of the busy city intersection.
And if you look very closely, you can see ‘Nuala’ is wrapped in St Brigid's cloak and stands atop a cast bronze foundry globe featuring cities around the world with historic trading links to Belfast, as she towers above the river where goods have come and gone over centuries.
Enjoy your own bit of inner peace with our miniature version of ‘Thanksgiving’.
