Collection: Bangor Bell - St Comgall's Bell
We have made our own version of the famous Bangor Bell - St Comgall's Bell.
St Comgall founded a monastery on the Bangor site in c.558 and the original bell was believed to call the monks to prayer; there were upwards of 4000 monks across numerous locations.
Furtively hidden by Monks from Viking raiders and unearthed centuries later by gravediggers in 1780, this sacred instrument lasts as a symbol of triumph over adversity and is a reminder of the rich history of County Down.
Having been saved from plunder, the bell was in private hands for some 150 years and then housed in the Ulster Museum before coming to Bangor Borough Council in the 1950s. It has been housed in North Down Museum, Bangor, since 1984.Â
The ‘Bangor Bell Trail’ is an interpretive art trail that tells the story of St Columbanus and his journey through life. There are seven pieces of art commencing at Bangor Abbey through to North Down Museum - but you can wear your own by buying our version.
Our jewellery is also on display at the museum shop for purchase should you be visiting Northern Ireland.
More information on the Museum can be found via the link.
